Africa New Energies has a grand vision – to light up Africa by providing 630 million people living without electricity access to universal solar power. They are collaborating on the project by providing their visualisation expertise to the linguistic and computational analysis performed by Concept Analytics Lab researchers.

The Mass Observation Project was launched in 1981, with the aim of reviving the early Mass Observation organisation idea of a national writing panel. Since it began, almost 4,500 people have volunteered to write for the Project. Many of these writers have been corresponding over several years, making the Project rich in qualitative longitudinal material. Mass Observation data gives us solid narrative text with the accompanying demographic data to perform multi-layered sociolinguistic analysis.

Launched in April 2018, UKRI is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Research England is the UKRI council responsible for supporting research and knowledge exchange at higher education institutions in England and works together with the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK to provide funding such as the Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF).

The Sussex Digital Humanities Lab is one of the four Strategic Research Programmes at the University of Sussex. It is a cross-campus research programme concerned with the eco-socio-cultural potentials and impacts of an increasingly digital world. Sussex Digital Humanities Lab investigates the interactions between computational technology, culture, society, and environment. Concept Analytics Lab’s research is closely aligned with Sussex Digital Humanities Lab. Its interdisciplinary approach combines linguistic and computational analysis to harness the power of both macro- and micro-perspectives when analysing linguistic data.
