Language In the Human-Machine Era (LITHME) is a COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) funded network of researchers in linguistics, computer science and related disciplines which explores the increasing degree of integration of language and computers.

The lab worked with Dr Stefan Halikowski-Smith at thehe University of Swansea collaborated with the Concept Analytics Lab to explore historical trends what impressions Catholic missionaries had of the Dutch East India Company, an institution at the forefront of early modern merchant capitalism and the greatest multinational employer of its day. We used conceptual techniques to explore relationships between the perscution of Catholics, administrative apathy and reactions to biblical translations in the seventeenth century.

The Westminster Centre for Research in Ageing, Mental Health and Veterans aims to support the military community through innovative and high quality research, educational provision and community engagement. The Sussex Digital Humanities Lab is one of the four Strategic Research Programmes at the University of Sussex. It is a cross-campus research programme concerned with the eco-socio-cultural potentials and impacts of an increasingly digital world. Sussex Digital Humanities Lab investigates the interactions between computational technology, culture, society, and environment. Concept Analytics Lab’s research is closely aligned with Sussex Digital Humanities Lab. Its interdisciplinary approach combines linguistic and computational analysis to harness the power of both macro- and micro-perspectives when analysing linguistic data.

The Mass Observation Project was launched in 1981, with the aim of reviving the early Mass Observation organisation idea of a national writing panel. Since it began, almost 4,500 people have volunteered to write for the Project. Many of these writers have been corresponding over several years, making the Project rich in qualitative longitudinal material. Mass Observation data gives us solid narrative text with the accompanying demographic data to perform multi-layered sociolinguistic analysis.

Leeds Beckett University collaborated with the Concept Analytics Lab on a project around household recycling, for which we were able to cross disciplines and explore how recycling is discussed by those who perform it.

Africa New Energies has a grand vision – to light up Africa by providing 630 million people living without electricity access to universal solar power. They are collaborating on the project by providing their visualisation expertise to the linguistic and computational analysis performed by Concept Analytics Lab researchers.

Research England is the UKRI council responsible for supporting research and knowledge exchange at higher education institutions in England and works together with the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK to provide funding such as the Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF).

The Keep brings together the archives and collections of the University of Sussex, East Sussex and Brighton & Hove Record Office and Brighton & Hove Museums. Justyna Robinson has led a range of successful teaching and research projects in collaboration with The Keep. Most recently she contributed to the "Mass Observing COVID-19 Project"  Advisory Group, funded by Wellcome. Boldspace is a branding, creative and PR agency. They make an objective, positive impact by building meaningful brands and creating bold communications. We partnered with Boldspace to analyse gender-based financial confidence data, provide expert commentary on how language shapes perception, contribute to a guide reframing limiting language into empowering alternatives, and support media engagement. We came up with the idea of

We came up with the idea of The Gender Justification Gap. This collaboration was supported by the Plum App.
The Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy (CITP) is built on the precept that trade policy should be inclusive in both policy formulation and outcome and comprises researchers and external partners across the UK. We worked with the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy to find out what Citizens’ Juries thought on trade policy in the UK. A co-authored paper on the concept of trust in international trade deals has just been accepted to Journal of Language and Politics (see working paper here).

We provide courses and resources for both learners and trainers, supporting the research community in the social sciences and beyond. Our researchers have delivered several training sessions and discussion forums with NCRM, including 'Meaning Extraction from Large Text Data: Thematic Analysis via Corpus Linguistics'  in June 2025 and 'Big Qualitative Data: Creative Ways of Working with Qualitative Analysis at Scale' (September 2025, read more and sign up here).
